· What's going on with nutrition product guidelines? ·
Hi Saturday Morning Fan,
One of the points that Alex and Michelle always raise in their sports nutrition product reviews is how the manufacturer recommends using their products. If you have watched the reviews, you will know that there is a huge range of different recommendations. This week, we are talking about why that is and what to do about it.
Differing Starting Points
Many sports nutrition products are the result of an athlete struggling with nutrition and trying to find a solution that works for them. These athletes often have different levels of competitiveness, compete in different sports, have different histories as athletes, and use the research available to them at the time.
In these cases, it is no surprise that they found different solutions to their problems. Their solutions can often work for some other athletes too. However, without understanding the context and individuals involved, general recommendations can easily deviate from what research suggests is best practice.
Then, there are companies trying to make money by convincing athletes that their products are worth a premium due to a unique ingredient or special formula. Sometimes they provide good recommendations. However, often the focus is on their formula or "special" ingredient, and they miss providing what athletes truly need.
Inertia in Development and Packaging
Once a company has a nutrition product that is selling well, it can be hard for them to change. Developing new formulas, testing new products, getting approval, and creating new packaging all take time. Even the most science-focused companies can fall behind or choose not to test new ideas.
What Should You Do?
There is no doubt that sports nutrition companies offer options with great flavors, convenient packaging, and simple solutions to help you fuel your activities. If you want to use these products, do not rely on the manufacturer guidelines. Instead, make the product fit into your fueling plan.
In the Saturday app, you can always add products when you have a recipe to include your favorite options and get some variety. Your recipe is created for you and the activity you are planning, and you get to choose what products fit into that.
Of course, you can also always just go for the DIY approach and make Speed Nectar for yourself!
