· Taste in the mouth and sports nutrition ·
Hi Saturday Morning Fan,
This week, we’re shifting our focus from the stomach and small intestine to the mouth and its critical role in sports nutrition.
What is the role of the mouth in sports nutrition?
The mouth serves two essential functions when we consume sports nutrition: it initiates the mechanical breakdown of food (particularly important when consuming bars or real food) and provides taste perception. Taste is not merely about enjoyment; it signals to our bodies that nutrients are on their way, influencing how much we consume, especially during prolonged efforts.
Taste fatigue and athletic performance
"Taste fatigue" can become an issue during extended endurance events. Athletes may find it increasingly challenging to consume sweet-tasting energy gels or drinks, which can compromise carbohydrate intake. To mitigate this, incorporating a variety of flavors can help maintain adequate nutrient intake throughout long events.
Mouth rinsing and taste receptors
An intriguing area of research is carbohydrate mouth rinsing. Studies indicate that simply rinsing the mouth with a carbohydrate solution can enhance short-term (30-60 minute) endurance performance, even if the solution isn’t swallowed. While we recommend actually consuming your sports nutrition, it’s worth noting that the taste itself may prime your body for fuel, signalling that energy is on the way.
What should you do?
1. Experiment with flavors: Try different flavors in your sports nutrition to combat taste fatigue during long events.
2. Incorporate savory options: Consider adding savory or salty options to your race nutrition strategy.
3. Utilize mouth rinsing: For shorter, high-intensity events, consider carbohydrate mouth rinsing as a potential performance enhancer.
4. Rinse you mouth with water: This last tip is to keep your dentist happy! Make sure to rinse out your mouth with water to help look after your teeth and reduce the chances of taste fatigue.
Remember, taste preferences are highly individual. What works for one athlete may not work for another, so it's essential to experiment and find what works best for you.
