## · Sweat testing for sports ·

Hi Saturday Morning Fan,

In recent weeks, we've discussed electrolytes in sports nutrition, highlighting the importance of sodium and the fact that potassium is not needed during exercise. Many athletes seek to quantify their sweat to guide hydration and nutrition strategies for training and racing through sweat testing. This week, we'll provide insights on sweat testing and how to interpret the data.

**What does sweat testing tell you?**

A sweat test typically provides two key pieces of information:

1) Sweat rate (in L/hour)

2) Electrolyte concentration in sweat (in mg/L)

These results are specific to the conditions of that particular test. If an athlete plans to race in identical conditions, this data could be useful.

**Limitations of sweat testing**

Sweat test results can be significantly affected by numerous variables, including:

Weather conditions (sun exposure, wind speed and direction)

Environmental factors (shade from buildings, trees, etc.)

Clothing color

Hydration status

Blood sodium levels

Recent sodium, potassium, and water consumption

Recent exercise and sweat loss

Training status and fitness level

Heat acclimation

Given these variables, it's challenging to apply test results directly to different training sessions or races without considering all the factors for both the testing and the race conditions. This makes the use of sweat test results to be more an art than a science.

**Guiding your fueling strategy**

Fortunately, our bodies and intuition manage this multitude of variables effectively. Research shows that most athletes are adept at estimating their sweat rate and sweat saltiness. The Speed Nectar app includes sliders to help you adjust for each session based on your intuition. We recommend that you **trust your instincts and how you anticipate feeling during a session** to adjust the sliders to set up your session.

If you do have sweat test results, you can use them to inform the base settings in the app. Under Menu / Personalize, you'll find options for "Personal sweat level" and "Personal saltiness" which you can adjust according to your test results. However, **it is not necessary to do a sweat test and you can also use your intuition** to complete these input variables.

## · Sodium guidance video ·

In this video, we'll explore optimal sodium intake for endurance athletes, considering factors like sweat rate, concentration, and exercise duration. We aim to replace sodium lost in sweat during training, while keeping gut tolerance in mind.
